It is almost impossible to meet the essential salt requirement through normal feeding, as grass, hay and cereals contain hardly any salt. Higher temperatures, exercise or even sweating lead to a considerable increase in requirements. Salts regulate fluid balance, are essential for the nervous, enzyme and metabolic systems and regulate the acid–base balance. Deficiencies can lead to weakness, lethargy, muscle wasting and even severe digestive disorders. Therefore, a salt lick should be available for all grazing animals.

Unlike conventional salt, sea salt contains a range of minerals and trace elements that are hardly found in standard table salt, in a naturally balanced ratio.
