An incubator, also known as a brood chamber, creates ideal conditions for the growth of microorganisms. Humidity and temperature can be adjusted and maintained consistently.

This is particularly useful when creating an antibiogram. To do this, a sample—taken, for example, from the throat, ears, skin, or urinary tract—is placed on a nutrient medium or another pre-prepared substrate. Depending on the microorganism, the appropriate temperature must be set in the incubator to stimulate bacterial growth. Additionally, the samples are treated with different antibiotics. After 18 to 24 hours, the first results can be obtained. If an antibiotic is effective, inhibition zones form around the bacteria at the point where the antibiotic was applied. In these areas, bacterial growth is suppressed, indicating the antibiotic's effectiveness.

An antibiogram allows for a much more targeted and effective antibiotic therapy. Especially in cases of prolonged symptoms, creating such an antibiogram is more beneficial than randomly trying three different broad-spectrum antibiotics. Instead of antibiotics, cultures in the incubator can also be treated with essential oils—a process known as an aromatogram.
