It is hardly possible to meet the essential salt requirement through normal feeding, as grass, hay and cereals contain very little salt. Higher temperatures, exercise or sweating lead to a significant increased requirement.
Salts regulate fluid balance, are essential for the nervous, enzyme and metabolic systems and regulate
the acid–base balance. Deficiencies can lead to weakness, lethargy, muscle wasting and even severe digestive disorders. Therefore, a salt lick should be available for all grazing animals.

Unlike ordinary salt, sea salt contains a range of minerals and trace elements that are hardly found in `standard´ table salt, in a naturally balanced ratio.
