Urine contains a small amount of albumin; a high albumin level indicates renal dysfunction. This can be a crucial diagnostic indicator. An impending heart attack, diabetes and high blood pressure can cause the albumin level to rise.

Even a small protein excretion in urine (microalbuminuria) can be of great significance for your health. This applies especially if you have diabetes or suffer from high blood pressure. It is usually the only indication of impaired kidney function. If kidney disease is detected and treated early, kidney function can be preserved for much longer. Microalbuminuria can also indicate a possible impending heart attack. Therefore, if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, you should have your urine tested for albumin and microalbuminuria at least once a year; otherwise, every two years. In any case, checking for the presence of albumin in urine is a very good tool for assessing your own health status and, if values are above 10 mg/l, taking appropriate further measures.
