Excessively high D-dimer values may indicate deep vein thrombosis of the leg, pulmonary embolism, excessive blood clotting (disseminated intravascular coagulation), malignant tumours, leukaemias or severe liver cirrhosis. Low values have no clinical significance.
Detailed test data:
The detection limit is 500 ng/ml.
Evaluation exactly after 10 minutes.
Storage at 2–30 °C.
Individual portion vials for the buffer solution are included in the kit, preventing carry-over and providing sufficient reagent for each cassette.
Important notice:
In patients with acute chest pain and shortness of breath, an increased D-dimer value and the absence of typical cardiac marker changes indicate pulmonary embolism.
When the protein fibrin, which is of crucial importance for plasma coagulation, is broken down, the product D-dimer is formed. If blood coagulation starts in the body, the concentration of D-dimer in the blood increases. This test makes it possible to rule out pulmonary embolism (PE), deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). With D-dimer, it should be noted that the diagnostic value of the test decreases with increasing patient age. Scientists have developed a formula to extrapolate the cut-off: “Age in years x 10 micrograms per litre”; however, if values are above 500 micrograms per litre, further diagnostic investigations are always necessary.
