During docking, the tails of newborn piglets are cauterised and the blood vessels are sealed at the same time. The immediate sealing of the vessels prevents pathogens from entering. As a rule, the tails are left about 2–3 cm long. The aim of docking is to prevent tail biting (cannibalism) among pigs, which can be triggered by long tails during the rearing and fattening phase.
