Bacteria and germs can survive on surfaces for several months and cause diseases. For this reason, they pose a significant problem, especially in medical environments. Conventional cleaning agents have only a limited virucidal effect when disinfecting surfaces and medical equipment. Therefore, choosing an effective surface disinfectant is crucial. Products from manufacturers such as Dr. Schumacher or B. Braun differ in terms of their effectiveness and intended use. Before use, it is essential to consider the required contact time, concentration, and compatibility with different objects and surfaces to ensure long-term hygiene. Adhering to the specified contact time is necessary to effectively eliminate bacteria and germs and to prevent resistance development. Additionally, the regular use of effective disinfectants helps reduce the risk of infection transmission. Before applying a disinfectant, it is important to remove dust and other contaminants from surfaces and medical devices. All suitable surface disinfectants are listed in the disinfectant registry of the Society for Hygiene and Microbiology and can be referenced there.
Areas of Application for Surface Disinfectants
Surface disinfectants are primarily used in medical environments such as hospitals, (veterinary) clinics, and outpatient care. They are also widely used in public institutions such as kindergartens and schools. Medical surfaces and objects that require disinfection include, for example, examination chairs, treatment couches, and hospital beds. To ensure safety, gloves should always be worn when handling disinfectants.
Surface Disinfection for Various Uses
Wipe Disinfection for Floors:
For floor disinfection, two different wiping techniques help prevent the spread of bacteria and germs. One method involves pre-soaked mop covers, which can be applied easily and conveniently. Alternatively, a two-step wiping method can be used: first, the disinfectant is applied to the floor, and then excess liquid is removed in the second step. Both techniques should be changed after approximately 25 square meters of surface coverage. For larger areas, using proper disinfection accessories ensures efficiency.
Spray Disinfection:
Some areas are difficult to access and cannot be disinfected using the wiping technique. In such cases, spray disinfectants can be an alternative, although it is generally less effective than wiping. Additionally, it is advisable to wipe the surface with a cloth after spraying to achieve a hygienic result. Please note that using spray disinfectants releases aerosols into the air, which may cause allergic reactions. These aerosols should not be inhaled.
Disinfectant Wipes:
Often available in dispensers, disinfectant wipes are a convenient option for disinfecting smaller surfaces. These wipes may come pre-saturated with disinfectant or require manual application of the solution. They are particularly useful for disinfecting hands or medical instruments.
