The term lancet comes from the French word lance, which is derived from lanze, meaning a small lance. A lancet essentially refers to a miniature version of a lance.
A blood lancet consists of a stainless steel blade. On the opposite side, there is usually a plastic protective cover to prevent accidental injury. Most lancets also come with a lancing device, into which the lancet is inserted for use.
The small blade is used to prick the skin to obtain a drop of blood. The fingertip is commonly used for this purpose, with the side of the finger being the preferred site, as it has fewer nerve endings and therefore causes less pain. If pricking the finger is not possible, the earlobe can be used as an alternative.
In addition to blood collection, lancets also play a role in allergy testing, specifically in the prick test. In this procedure, a new blood lancet is used for each puncture to make small pricks on the skin of the forearm. Allergen solutions are then applied to these punctures to trigger an allergic reaction. If no reaction occurs, the test result is negative, meaning there is no sensitivity to that particular substance.
