This category offers venipuncture needles, also known as butterfly or winged needles, from reputable manufacturers at fair prices. Venipuncture needles are particularly well-suited for blood collection in cases of difficult venous conditions.
Practical and Simple Application of the Winged Needle
The structure of the winged or butterfly needle, which is a sterile, single-use needle, differs significantly from other veterinary needles. This veterinary needle consists of a fine needle—typically made of chrome-nickel steel—a flexible tube with a Luer connector, and a pair of flexible plastic wings. This design is especially advantageous for blood collection, as the blood collection tube is not directly attached to the needle but rather at the end of a tube approximately 30 cm in length, allowing for easy replacement. This setup keeps both hands free during blood collection, ensuring that the needle remains securely in place without the risk of being dislodged when switching tubes. For optimal compatibility, veterinarians can use these needles together with appropriate blood collection systems.
During insertion, the two wings can be pressed together, allowing for secure handling and precise needle placement. Once the needle has been inserted into the vein, the wings are affixed to the patient’s skin using adhesive tape. This fixation prevents the needle from shifting during blood collection, infusion, or medication administration, thereby reducing the risk of puncturing the vein wall.
Using the Butterfly Needle for Infusions
The butterfly needle is suitable for infusions that are administered occasionally rather than on a daily or multiple-times-per-day basis. It is ideal for short-term medication delivery, as it can be securely fixed and remains well-positioned. Particularly for animals with very delicate veins, the butterfly needle serves as an excellent alternative to an indwelling venous catheter. Veterinarians may also choose peripheral venous catheters when repeated or long-term venous access is required, and can pair both systems with suitable infusion stands for controlled administration.
