Pressure Injectors or Needle-Free Syringes for Veterinary Medicine
When administering medications without the use of a needle or cannula, needle-free syringes, also known as pressure injectors, are used. These devices represent a specialized type of syringe for veterinarians. In veterinary medicine, needle-free syringes are primarily utilized to simplify subcutaneous injections, particularly in small animals. These application aids can be cleaned with water and reused after proper cleaning.
Needle-Free Medication Administration
Needle-free syringes offer a versatile range of applications. They are particularly beneficial for patients with needle phobia, providing an effective alternative to subcutaneous injections with traditional syringes. Additionally, pressure injectors are easy to handle. After filling the cylindrical chamber with the medication solution, the device head is placed and secured. The device is then primed by lifting the release button and pulling back the tension lever. Once prepared, the pressure injector can be positioned against the skin or fur using the distance cap, with a perpendicular alignment recommended for optimal application. The injection is triggered by pressing the release button, delivering the medication under the skin without the need for a needle. The medication penetrates approximately four to six millimeters beneath the skin, forming a small subcutaneous welt at the injection site.
Sterilization of Needle-Free Syringes
Needle-free syringes must be sterilized after each use. It is recommended to autoclave the device at 134°C for proper sterilization. Before autoclaving, the pressure injector should be rinsed with water. The maintenance interval for these devices is typically 4,000 injections or 18 months. To support hygienic handling, veterinarians may also use suitable skin and hand disinfection products during preparation. Additionally, compatible veterinary syringes may be used for complementary procedures when needle-free application is not appropriate.
